Aromatherapy with Helen Carr

Aromatherapy is described as an ancient art and a modern day science. The base materials of an aromatherapist are essential oils, which are obtained from plants.

An essence is an oily substance contained within plants and are thought to help regulate the plant, protect it from disease, aids its growth – the plants ‘hormone’. Once extracted from the plant, the essence is then known as an essential oil. Essential oils have complex chemical structures and individual aromas, as well as various theraputic properties. The molecules enter the body via the skin and nose and have effects on the body.

Certain oils are avoided during pregnancy, if you have a medical condition or breast feeding. They need to be used with caution but if used carefully and appropriately, can be very useful during pregnancy and childbirth. Essential oils can be vapourised, eg in an oil burner, added to the bath, used in a compress but the most popular method in this country is in a carrier oil for massage purposes.
